What Are Import Size Number Plates?
Vehicles manufactured for different international markets don’t always have the same number plate recess dimensions as UK-market vehicles.
This can mean a conventional UK-sized plate doesn’t fit the available mounting area correctly or looks oversized for the vehicle.
An import-size number plate uses different plate dimensions to better suit these smaller or differently proportioned recesses while displaying the vehicle registration appropriately.
Japanese Import Number Plates
Japanese vehicles are one of the most common reasons customers require import-size plates.
Depending on the vehicle, a Japanese import may have a shorter or differently shaped plate recess than a typical UK-market car.

This allows you to select the appropriate plate for the available recess rather than assuming the front and rear mounting areas are identical.

Are Import Size Number Plates Road Legal?
Using a smaller plate doesn’t automatically make a registration plate road legal.
Where an import-size plate is intended for use on public roads, the finished plate and selected configuration must meet the applicable UK requirements for the vehicle concerned.
These requirements can cover matters including character dimensions and spacing, margins, reflective materials and required supplier/manufacturer markings.
Where required, you’ll also need to provide suitable documentation confirming your identity and entitlement to use the registration number.
